A treasure trove of arts & crafts

Once upon a time, Gstaad was little known to the outside world. Then the railway was built, and in 1913, the first grand hotel rose from the ground. An exciting, creative world began to unfold

With the arrival of tourism, the region's craftsmen set about making mountain gear, bobsleighs, snowshoes, skis… Today, their manual expertise, love of craftsmanship, and local traditions are still reflected in several different fields.

"My passion for traditional papercuts began 40 years ago," says Regina Martin (www.scherenschnitt-atelier.ch), a regular participant in exhibitions and workshops for adults and children. "My works revolve around our farm animals, trees, and flowers."

Another artist who "draws with scissors" is Ueli Hauswirth (www.scherenschnitt-hauswirth.ch), whose designs have been transferred to leather wallets and even Wengeneralp trains. In her studio in Gstaad, Lilian Lampart (www.lilianart.ch) shares her fondness for cows, goats, and hens, painted on wood and pottery.

At the Steiner Art Atelier (www.ateliersteiner.ch), wooden clocks, chests, and caskets can be personalized, while Christine Baumgartner creates charming pottery and ceramics (www.enziankeramik.ch). You can even explore one of the Swiss Alps' most beloved symbols at the Alphorn Atelier in Schönried where Fritz Frautschi organizes courses and concerts (www.alphornatelier.ch).

To admire high-quality handicrafts including wool, handwoven carpets, pottery, wood, and toys, the Landschaft Museum in Saanen is a must. Housed in a former mill and weaving factory, it holds permanent and temporary exhibitions, with the Heimatwerk store offering a treasure trove of gift ideas (www.museum-saanen.ch, www.heimatwerk-saanen.ch).

Welcoming fans of culinary traditions, many farms sell fresh, homemade treats such as Alpine cheese, sausages, and air-dried meat. Set off on a cheese dairy or stable tour, and visit the Cheese Grotto and cheese specialist in Gstaad (www.molkerei-gstaad.ch). The simple pleasures in life!
