Basque country, five awesome places to visit

Passionate about the region, Julien Dizpar describes his best spots on his site paysbasque.net. For the Régina, he has agreed to share his favourites, off the beaten track.
1. Harpéa's Cave

Natural grotto in a valley on the Franco-Spanish border. An anticline of stone and mineral layers, many centuries old. A unique ambiance where silence resigns, typical of Iraty (Basque mountain range). Hiking possible to the peak of Mendizar (1319 m).

2. Jaizkibel mountain range

Start of the Pyrenees, near the sea. Open nature, panoramic views of the Basque coast, mountains & ocean. Drive along the road across the Jaizkibel to see the sunset, then descend to Hondarribia to enjoy a few "pinchos".

3. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

Along the Atlantic, a steep, winding road and a superb view: small creeks, wild beaches, tall cliffs. The island is linked to the mainland by a stone bridge, the chapel is reached via a narrow path (over 200 steps). According to legend, after climbing the rock, you make the bell strike three times and make a wish…

4. Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum

Cristóbal Balenciaga was born in Getaria, where a museum has one of the largest collections of the designer's production, and stages exhibitions year round. Then visit the vineyards of Txakoli (a sparkling white wine), to be sampled on Getaria's harbour.

5. Mount Calvary in Urrugne

An excursion for the whole family (from age 4). In 30 minutes, you reach a little chapel in the mountains with a stunning view of the Basque coast, but also the adorable Pottok ponies.
