Sports tourism : luxury, calm and... golf

The Basque country is a leading destination for golfers, with Saint-Jean-de-Luz boasting two courses overlooking the Rhune.

Golf is the most popular sport in the tourist industry worldwide, and with good reason since it’s the most played individual sport on the planet. Although its potential remains relatively unrecognised, France offers many advantages to attract golfers from the world over.

The Basque country boasts seven courses, each one ideally located between the mountains and sea, in exceptional natural settings. The emblematic Chantaco golf course, opened in 1928 , was designed by the British Harry Colt, a well-known figure in golf course architecture. Open throughout the year to all levels, it offers a variety of facilities including a very large practice area and an Art Deco Clubhouse, designed in 1928 by the architect Jean Walter.

Located close by is the Nivelle golf course, whose name derives from the adjacent river. Opened in 1907, it stands out for its exceptional views, notably over the Saint-Jean-de-Luz harbour. The course, landscaped in wooded parkland, was designed by John Henry Taylor, a famous English professional golfer. Undulating and varied, it provides technical difficulties which appeal to golfing enthusiasts. The choice is yours!
